I’ve decided to start a mini blog series called “My Plastic-Free Journey”. I’ve been making changes for a while now, but I thought it’d be good to share the changes I’m making and hopefully give some of you ideas of what swaps you can make in your own life to reduce your single-use plastics.

Every year billions of plastic toothbrushes are thrown away. They are dumped into our oceans or end up in landfills, where they sit around for about 1000 years before finally breaking down. That means your very first toothbrush is still laying on this planet somewhere and every single one you’ve used in between. Scary right?

I’ve been using bamboo toothbrushes for a few years now and more and more places are now stocking them. I just grabbed a new one from the recently opened Forage and Fill stall in Lincoln Central Market.

If you live in Lincoln or are visiting Lincoln, go and check them out! They’re all about refillable options and plastic free/zero waste choices. They have some really amazing stock and I’m sure they’re going to be my new favourite go-to store for so many necessities!

Bamboo toothbrushes do tend to cost a bit more than regular ones but I feel like this is a cost that I’m willing to spend to ensure I don’t contribute to the Earth’s plastic problem. This toothbrush cost me around £3.50 from Forage and Fill, which is super reasonable because the ones online often cost a lot more. You can find bamboo toothbrushes in any eco shops or health food shops.

Bamboo also has antimicrobial properties, so is great for mouth health! This means that bacteria growth is extremely limited and bamboo helps to fight bacterial growth in your mouth too.

Bamboo is sustainable and takes very little time to grow, often being cited as the solution to deforestation and other environmental problems. Bamboo toothbrushes can be recycled, composted and even burned, as bamboo doesn’t release toxic gas or chemicals when burning.

With many positives for switching to a bamboo toothbrush, why wouldn’t you?

Side note: I really love the rainbow bristles on my new one, they’re super cute! 🌈
